Yung sat us down on friday to go over the current version of the Lawyer Fight. Apologies for the poor sound, as it was recorded on a phone.
This is a first pass at an edit, and its missing the ending of the fight, but it even in its current state we are feeling great about the shape of it. We will post the full PreViz when there is a final edit of it.

Here it is! Pre vis of our first fight scene of the movie. Young Danny and Young Dicky get into a fight over who has to take out the trash. Working through choreography, rehearsal, and filming the pre vis took the stunt team about three days to complete.
"Pre vis" is short for pre visualization. It's a way to shoot and cut together a scene (usually action or one with a lot of movement) to help articulate the way a director sees the scene as those more kinetic moments are harder to writ...

Yung is giving us an idea of what August looks like for the stunt team and why this step is an important part of the production process for an action heavy script. They're on set choreographing, rehearsing, and filming all of the major action scenes. You'll be getting an in depth look at the process as they move through the fights.
Let us know if you have questions for the stunt team while they're here!

Week two of action choreography is underway! As we ramp up we have more and more moving parts.
This week Matt & Freddie are finalizing the bonus features, including an all new director’s commentary, for the physical release of WAGD!
Ashim is working with Freddie to work out VFX pain points for Box Car. We’ll get more insight on that process in a future post. We’re pulling back the curtain and that means a look at the frustrating parts alongside the fun stuff.

Set dressers Christopher and Fernando talk through the process of bringing Mama Wong's and the upstairs apartment to life.
Having key furniture pieces in place allows the stunt team to use the space as they're choreographing the major fight scenes. Meanwhile, QiQi (Set Decorator) is in China shopping for additional props and set dressing that will be added before filming starts - menus, art, more lived in touches. We're saying 'done' but things will continue to evolve up to the last mi...

Our regular Monday meeting moved to Tuesday this week because yesterday was day one of action at Mama Wong’s with the stunt team!
We had other key departments heads on site who you may recognize from past projects. Bongani is our DP, he shot We’re All Gonna Die and is back with us for Nail House. He’ll be in and out as the stunt team works to choreograph the fight scenes.
More familiar faces from WAGD are Maxton Waller, composer, and Kevin Senzaki, sound designer, who came b...

Matt and I headed up to Tomm Jacobson's workshop to have a look at the roughing out for the construction pit miniature. The plan here is to build out the construction pit in miniature form and to put a scale model of the restaurant in it (taking full advantage of Matt's thousands of hours of experience now doing miniature painting).
I have a crazy idea of doing photogrammetry at different times of day so that this can hopefully function as our background plates for shots from inside the...

Happy Monday y’all! The set is done and this week we have the art department working away at set decoration. What you’ve seen so far is the shell of our set, this week you’ll see the space truly come to life as a full restaurant.
Matt is finishing up the latest draft of the script.
Freddie is back from vacation, catching up, and finalizing extras for the physical release of We’re All Gonna Die 👀

Our Producer, Ashim, just sent a quick walkthrough video of the full set after the construction crew had left. This next week is set decoration. Furniture, art, details and all that jazz will be loading in and we should have a pretty close to finished Mama Wong's this friday! Action rehearsal in the set will start the week after.
That is all.

Matt here! Freddie is taking a well deserved break after 7 months of boxing training. A quick refresh before we start action rehearsal first thing next month. Which means you have to suffer a quick VFX from yours truly instead of the digital maestro himself.
Currently, all the VFX shots are with a company for a first pass on all the roto, matte clean up, plate preparation etc. Essentially all that initial work. They are then going to our VFX Supervisor, Nathan Samm, who will do final to...

The walls have gone up. The details are being added. We thought it was worth showing a walkthrough of the set. We also take the time to discuss where camera ports should go in the kitchen.
A camera port is just a hole in the set wall that we can remove so we can place camera outside of the set. Most the dumpling house has fly-a-way walls, meaning we can literally remove the whole wall and set up camera and lights out of the set. However the Kitchen walls are load bearing, supporting th...

Hey all, Yung Lee, Action Designer / Action Director of this film here making my first post! I recently had extensive discussions and meetings with Matt and Freddie about the crucial story beats for our film's opening action sequence: the fight between the two brothers. As the very first action set-piece, this scene is paramount in establishing both the core conflict between them and the overall tone of our film. Our goal is to quickly show that these two know how to "scrap" – that it's a n...

Little video of the big Matt himself testing the stairs and the second story structure.
Now that you’ve enjoyed that 28-second moving image, let’s get to some news: MAMA WONG’S IS WELL ON ITS WAY TO COMPLETION!
It was a solid week of construction just to build the foundation for the second floor and stairs. That’s because it actually has to function as a real, code-compliant, safe structure. While one construction crew focused on that, the rest of the art ...

But Dicky, the younger brother and the Mama’s boy of the duo, will be played by --

You folks are getting the Director's Cut version of my boxing overview video, which means you're getting the original music tracks I used to time and temp things in (selections from the excellent soundtrack for the must-watch anime Ping Pong by Kensuke Ushio).
The process used to make this video is one I've settled on over the years of doing YouTube. I start by recording a script, but then once I have footage and I start scooting things around, I rerecord bits and segments as t...

Construction on Mama Wong’s is just days away. Both the full set and the miniature version.
Above is a pass at the exterior of Mama Wong’s. This will be incredibly useful as I’m hoping to start the large-scale miniature of the exterior next week.

Hot of the presses! We are getting very close to a design that will be construction ready. Just wanted to share the latest video walkthrough of the set.
Little note, at the beginning the green wall with a large opening is the loading dock door of our warehouse space. So the idea is we can open our loading door and have and exterior set, just the front doorway and some space around it.

A little friday update as well as the above video. Here is our final review of the traincar sequence before we locked the cut.
We had already spent the day fine tuning the edit. So this was thefinal watch through with us and Yung. Most of what we do in this video is what Freddie likes to call "frame fucking". Usually we are just tweaking an edit by a frame or two. Though we do find new reaction shot that we can't believe we missed. So, lesson is. Even when you think...

Here is a discussion between our cinematographer, Bongani Mlambo, and our Production Designer, Erik Louis Robert.
Bongani shot the Train Car sequence, which means he has a good sense of what did and didn't work with a closed set within our stage space. So before we get into the actual final designs of the set, Erik wants to talk through the current plans with Bongani so they can catch as many possible issues before we actual build this thing.

Pages 17–21 of Nail House have been filmed, and the cut is locked.
When we say “locked cut,” we mean this version of the edit is now the foundation for the rest of the post-production process. Realistically, the edit might still change slightly—heck, we were tweaking We’re All Gonna Die even after screening it at SXSW.
But from this point on, we can’t just change things willy-nilly. That’s because a whole lot of other people are now...

Hey folks!
Here you’ll find the complete (though still very much incomplete) previs for the Train Car sequence
“Previs” is short for previsualization—any form of mapping out scenes, blocking, or visual elements of a movie. It can be as simple as animated blocks of text, storyboards, or even a rough film shoot of a scene before doing it for real.
Freddie and I haven’t used previs all that often. We have used them occasiona...
